⬢ Name: Yan Qing 燕青
⬢ Canon: Fate/Grand Order
⬢ Canon Point: before Lostbelt 5, Atlantis/Olympus

⬢ History: The basics are in his profile in the Fate/Grand Order materials, so you can skip most of this and read the last paragraph for the game-relevant parts.
Yan Qing is from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin (a.k.a. Suikoden), a picaresque novel about the outlaws of Liangshan Marsh. Each of these outlaws were the 108 Stars of Destiny: demons reincarnated as humans to find redemption and glory as heroes of Song dynasty China, a land with corruption found at every turn.

One of these outlaws was Yan Qing, the Skillful Star. He was a young orphan taken in by the rich and influential Lu Junyi, who he came to serve under. It was Lu Junyi who paid a tattooist to decorate his skin at an early age. As Lu Junyi's servant, Yan Qing grew up a handsome, witty and charismatic jack-of-all-trades. He was good at anything you could think of, but he was most known for his talents in martial arts, music, and persuasion.

However, Lu Junyi's naivete and refusal to listen to Yan Qing's advice eventually led to their joining the outlaws of Mt. Liang. When Lu Junyi was tricked by the bandits and persuaded to go to Mt. Liang, Yan Qing was thrown out of the house by Lu Junyi's other servant Li Gu, who was having an affair with his master's wife. When Yan Qing informed Lu Junyi of this upon his return, Yan Qing earned the ire of his master and was cast aside. Despite this, the loyal Yan Qing saved his master, who was accused by his wife of a crime he did not commit, and killed his would-be executioners. Branded as criminals, both master and servant had no choice but to join the Liangshan outlaws in the mountains. Lu Junyi was made second-in-command, while Yan Qing was ranked 36th of the 108 Stars.

Yan Qing was an active participant during his time with the outlaws of Mt. Liang, accompanying their leader Song Jiang and their companions on many missions as a scout, messenger and spy. He is often joined by his friend Li Kui, who is his opposite in every way, disguising themselves to help others. Yan Qing's notable feats include winning against a giant in a wrestling match, never missing a mark with his triple-arrowed crossbow, and persuading the courtesan Li Shishi to help him ask the emperor to give the outlaws amnesty.

The outlaws became a special of the emperor's and were sent on missions to defeat invaders and rebels that threatened China. However, trouble was brewing at the capital. Corrupt officials such as their longtime enemy Gao Qiu were plotting to take revenge against the Liangshan outlaws. After the outlaws' successful campaign against the rebel Fang La, Yan Qing foresaw this and tearfully begged his former master Lu Junyi to run away with him. Ignoring Yan Qing’s words once more, Lu Junyi eventually died at the hands of Gao Qiu.

Yan Qing successfully slipped away from the bandits before they reached the capital. No one knows what happened to him after that. Despite the many chapters dedicated to his character, no one ever knew what he truly wanted.

In the Shinjuku singularity, Yan Qing was one of the Servants summoned by Baal and the Archer of Shinjuku, James Moriarty, to aid him in his quest to fight against his meta narrative and successfully destroy the world (for once!). However, a fictional character like Yan Qing can't be summoned normally. Thus, he was fused with the doppelganger, a phantom that eats at his identity, which put him at odds with Moriarty. Yan Qing was the unpredictable leader of a militant group called the Hornets who amassed wealth and power by subjugating the people of lawless Shinjuku with fear and violence. He transformed into Hassan of the Cursed Arm to kill the protagonist, Ritsuka Fujimaru, but ended up kidnapping them on a whim. He was an obstacle to Ritsuka but his plans were ultimately stopped with the help of Saber Alter, Jeanne Alter, Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty (it's complicated).

As Ritsuka's Servant in Chaldea, Yan Qing is a good-humored and loyal servant who does his best to earn his master's trust and his place in the organization.

A summary of his interlude, which is like a side story focused on him! It's in English on Youtube, if you want to make sure of the details here. I'm just lazy.

⬢ Personality:

Attentive, reliable, talented, and charming to boot — Yan Qing is everything you'd want in a servant. The protagonist sees him as someone they can trust despite his looks. Or maybe... it's because of his looks!? (No.) But he's only a servant because it was his lot in life, and pushed to a life of crime by circumstance. If he had to be anything else, be it hero or villain, he would choose to be free like the wind. Yan Qing is quick-witted, often using words to weasel out of difficult situations. Like a chameleon, he can adapt to any situation at the drop of a hat. Whatever life throws at him, he is optimistic at best...

...and blithe at worst. Others might think that Yan Qing is too carefree but Moriarty observes that his fun, devil-may-care nature is how he does away with his tragic past. Believing kindness to be a weakness, Yan Qing’s selfishness is a learned behavior. He's been burned many times and has since then fended for himself. Whatever damage he causes is only incidental. Choosing freedom and self-preservation above all else, he doesn't care about anything that doesn't immediately concern him or the people important to him. If he is to have a master, he would rather have a good one who will listen to him. And if they aren't, he'll just have to turn them into the kind of master he likes. Now that he's been summoned into the world, he wants to do things for himself and would do anything to achieve them, even if it means he has to lie, steal and cheat.

Yan Qing is an outlaw, after all, and his type can't be trusted. He amicably warns his Master not to get too close to him, but he soon warms up to them as he honors and deeply appreciates the trust placed in him, who was once doubted and abandoned. That is because he is always, always seeking recognition and approval. He works really hard for it, too! He was rarely ever praised when he was alive, so he's the type to shower himself in compliments to the point of obnoxiousness. But what can be mistaken for arrogance is only a cover. In truth, Yan Qing is ashamed of his past. His lot in life was that of an orphan, a servant, and an outlaw. Trust was something rare for him to give and receive. While he was aware of his competence, his sense of self-worth left much to be desired, especially after his master sacrificed himself for the greater good.

Yet he sees the moment he left Lu Junyi as a betrayal. Despite Lu Junyi's incompetence, Yan Qing didn't really hate his former master. He idolized him, killed for him, and even wished he could exact revenge on his master's murderers. One of his greatest regrets is his master's death. He believes he should have stopped his master even if it meant he had to kill him, as that would have been the more honorable action to take. This is nature as a Star of Destiny, hungry for praise and glory — achievements that he can truly be proud of.

Other Heroic Spirits from legends of old like King Arthur and Medusa were said to truly exist in their time. But as with Heroic Spirits like Holmes and Moriarty, Yan Qing is aware that he only exists in books. Knowing this, he wants to change his narrative and be remembered for something great. He would rather die than lose. Unfortunately, the Doppelganger he's fused with constantly seeks other heroes worthy of becoming, placing it at odds with Yan Qing's desire for his own glory and identity, especially during the events of the Shinjuku singularity.

However, the version Ritsuka summons to Chaldea after that gets along with the insecure and repentant Doppelganger within him. Yan Qing is willing to share his body and identity with it so that it can become a great ruffian who fights for the sake of justice, just like him! Even if Yan Qing doesn't truly think much of himself. If Ritsuka trusts him and believes in him to be good, he thinks he can do anything.

Yan Qing is a man of instinct, driven by his innate desire to do what is right no matter the consequences. He is a dangerous and unpredictable storm, as what does is not always good. More often than not, he is self-serving unless it comes to the needs of his master, and self-destructive when he is consumed by his emotions. He will not hesitate to kill when it serves him purpose; his hands might move before he is even aware of them. Nevertheless, he lives by his own personal code and he'll be damned if he breaks it.

⬢ Powers: Here! Let me know if you want a more mobile-friendly version. What's really important (aside from the Servant and contract stuff) is that he has an ability that lets him turn into other people as well as use their powers or assimilate their memories. By default, I will not have him use their powers or assimilate memories unless I have player permission.

He will also try very hard not to destroy the library! Books are his family. But his strength will be nerfed as needed, too.

⬢ Inventory: Just the clothes on his back and a couple vials of mystic spinal fluid. It gives humans the ability to use magic for a short period of time. Feel free to nerf this or take it away as needed?! I am cool with it.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Here! What's really important is that he has a doppelganger ability that lets him turn into other people as well as assimilate their memories. By default, I will not have him assimilate memories unless I have player permission.

He would usually need mana to survive but in light of game mechanics, he won't need to find a Master for his supply. It would give him a boost, though.

INVENTORY: 12 vials of magical cerebrospinal fluid.

Powers & Limitations

Hint: hover over the terms in small caps!

The Assassin of Shinjuku, Yan Qing, is one of the many Heroic SpiritsHeroic Spirits are spirits of heroes who achieved great deeds in life, having become objects of worship after their deaths. summoned by the mage Ritsuka Fujimaru in Fate/Grand Order.

A mage can summon a Heroic Spirit to be their Servant: a spirit that acts somewhat like a familiar to their summoner—their Master—to, under normal circumstances, compete in the Holy Grail War.The Holy Grail War is a battle royale for the Holy Grail, a magical device that can grant any wish. Participants include both mages and Heroic Spirits.

Each Servant is a powerful magical entity that has their own special set of skills based on the personality they were in history or myth. Their parameters such as strength, agility, etc. are superhuman compared to that of a person with even magically-enhanced abilities, making them a lethal opponent in a fight even if they hold back.

Parameters

Table here later.

Class Skills

Class Skills are skillsets given to a Servant of the corresponding ClassHeroic Spirits summoned by the Holy Grail are placed into one of various Classes. The seven standard classes are Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker. Servants of the Assassin class are skilled at operating covertly, stealthy, and silently. They specialize in killing Masters rather than Servants..

Presence Concealment C
Enables him to cloak his magical energy to make him seem human as well as prevent others from detecting his presence. It is suitable for spying. Its power greatly drops when he's preparing to attack.
Ruffian A
Enables him to ride or drive almost any animal or vehicle. It also enables him to use his mana even without a supply from his Master, even letting him manifest in the world for a longer period of time compared to other Servants. Its effect increases during banquets as a bonus.

For the canon-familiar, it's a combination of Riding and Independent Action.

Personal Skills

Personal Skills reflect the abilities a Heroic Spirit had in life and their personal legends.

Chinese Boxing EX (A+++)
He is a master at Chinese martial arts, particularly the Yanqingquan style which he was said to have created.
Espionage A
Makes one's presence fail to register as hostile. This skill causes others to mistake him for something else, such as a kind neighbor, a friend, or a loved one.
Skillful Star A+
The title given to him as he was born under a Demonic Star. He is destined to seek glory in order to atone for his past life's sins, but he is also foretold to encounter many misfortunes along the way. As the Skillful Star, he excels in the exquisite.

This skill just makes him really good at anything. He's a Mary Sue. Sorry. He's particularly good at conversation, singing, dancing and playing any kind of musical instrument.

Noble Phantasm

Assassin's Noble PhantasmNoble Phantasms are the embodiment of the ultimate mysteries of a hero that symbolizes one's existence through historical facts and anecdotes. Basically, a Servant's special attack. is Ambushed from Ten Sides - As if There Was No Shadow. When he uses this, he looks like he's making shadow clones of himself like fuckin Naruto, but he's really just moving super fast. That's literally it.

Doppelganger

The Doppelganger is a peculiar Personal Skill. During the Shinjuku singularity, Assassin was fused with the Doppelganger, a PhantomPhantoms are entities not qualified to become Heroic Spirits, being urban legends at most.. Fusing a Heroic Spirit with a Phantom bestows them with the Phantom's powers.

The Doppelganger allows Assassin to do the following:

The ability to change his appearance at will. He can only transform into other sentient beings with identities. (i.e. a statue - no; your mom - yes; your favorite anime character - yes; your dog - yes but that's cursed)

His disguise is indistinguishable from the original and can't be detected via magical means.
The ability to copy powers upon transformation. He is theoretically capable of copying a Servant's Skills and Noble Phantasms, but for personal reasons he doesn't copy the latter.

For characters who aren't Servants, he will not be able to use their most powerful abilities.
The ability to assimilate his chosen identity's feelings and memories upon transformation. This lets him perfectly copy his chosen identity's behavior and mannerisms. Memory probing is possible.

As a caveat, he remembers each identity he assumes, which eats away at his own. He needs to exert physical activity (i.e. fight) to remember himself. In Duplicity and PSLs, I've extended this to include sex for the sake of CR hooks because... because I can. Leave me alone.

Note: by default, I will not have Assassin probe your character's memories. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this ability further and/or use it in a thread!

Contracts

Servants subsist on their Master's magical energy to manifest in the world and use their powers. A Servant's power is also relative to the amount of magical energy available from their Master. If a Servant's magical energy is insufficient, they must resort to other means of acquiring magical energy: consuming human souls or bodily fluids.

Without a Master, Assassin will be at half-power. Although he has a skill that lets him last for a week without a Master, he will need to use his own magical energy to remain tangible in the world. In other words, he needs a battery or he will dieI won't make this as urgent in games due to RL and RP constraints, but it's a possible plot point to work with!.

Upon contracting Master gains 3 Command SpellsCommand Spells can compel a Servant to perform acts they might not ordinarily be capable of performing within limits. (e.g. order a Servant to escape, clean your living room, kill themselves (please don't do this), or amplify an attack using the incredible amount of magical energy the Command Spell provides) to command their Servant. General or vague commands such as "I order you to obey me!" won't be as effective as specific ones. The Spells appear on any part of the Master's body in any shape you (OOCly) wish.

The Contract ends when his Master dies, drops from the game, or uses up all three Command Spells.

Please contact me if you're interested in being his Master in-game! I'm also open to Master/Servant AUs for memes and PSLs.

Permissions, Warnings & Boundaries

Backtagging
Yes.
Threadhopping
Yes.
Fourthwalling
Yes; he's aware he's fictional anyway and FGO is weird sometimes.
CRAU
Probably a yes if the Yan Qing I play was the one who previously had CR with your character! Otherwise, no.
Doppelganger
He has the ability to transform into other people and by extension, assimilate their memories when he does this. By default, I will not have him assimilate memories unless I have player permission.
Hugging
Yes. Actually, he is likely to initiate.
Kissing
Yes unless you're not cute. He's picky unless he needs to do it for a mission.
Flirting
Yes. Give him validation. He craves it. He is also likely to initiate, especially if the person is exactly his type.
Romance
In memes and PSLs, yes. In Prismatica, it depends! He's bisexual and I'm okay with both m/f and m/m. I would rather see if our characters have chemistry first before we ship, but let's be real: we'll find a way.
Smut
In memes and PSLs, yes. In games, I'd like to have some CR first before it happens. His kinklist is a mix of what I am willing to write and what he is likely to do under certain circumstances. If you have any questions, just ask!
Mindreading
Yes, but if your character will try to use it when he's using the Doppelganger, please ask.
Manipulation
Mind games: yes; mind control: ask first! His mind already plays tricks on him sometimes.
Injury
Yes, but ask me first.
Fighting
Yes; no need to ask.
Death
No unless discussed beforehand.
IC Warnings and Boundaries
He has a dark past and trust and abandonment issues. Depending on his canon point, he may be more likely to use violence to get what he wants. Sometimes, he's also lewd. Let me know if you're uncomfortable with themes like sex and violence in tags. Also let me know if you'd rather not be tagged by this character at all! I'd be more than happy to accommodate you.
OOC Boundaries
Almost anything goes with me. I love writing fluff, romance, angst, and downright silly scenarios, but sex, violence and other dark themes are fine with me since the nature of his character lends to those narratives.

Detailed Information

Appearance
Long black hair and sharp green eyes. A handsome face with the build of a martial artist who's been honing his skill for years. A suspicious character due to his tattoos and long hair.

His full body tattoos: a dragon wraps around his arms and legs, its head rests on the right side of his chest, peonies decorate his torso, lower back and thighs, and a large 義 (yì)The character means "right conduct; justice; righteousness", or the moral disposition to do what is right no matter the consequences. is written and encircled on his upper back.
Voice
Okamoto Nobuhiko. All his voiced lines are here, subbed! Here's another video where you go on a date with him I GUESS. He often uses very informal language and speaks with a lazy, amiable drawl. Rough around the edges, but can be surprisingly eloquent when the time calls for it. He's an excellent singer.
History & Background
Yan Qing is from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin (a.k.a. Suikoden), a picaresque novel about the outlaws of Mount Liang, a mountain surrounded by marshlands. Each of these outlaws were the 108 Stars of Destiny: demons reincarnated as humans to find redemption and glory as heroes of China, a land with corruption at every turn during the last years of the Song dynasty. More information in his app. Spoilers for FGO ahead!
Personality
Friendly and fun with a relaxed, devil-may-care attitude. Unpredictable, though. It's kind of worrying? Often takes things in stride unless they have something to do with his master, who he absolutely spoils. A smooth talker. Has a (self-proclaimed) strong sense of justice. He seems arrogant due to his penchant for self-praise, but he only does this to mask his insecurities regarding his self-worth. He is cagey about his past.
Skills
archery, martial arts, assassination, persuasion, espionage, singing, dancing, playing musical instruments
Powers
He's a Heroic Spirit (i.e. a figure from history or myth) summoned as a Servant, which somewhat works like a magical familiar. Although he can bleed, his body is made of magical energy. He needs a contract with a Master to receive magical energy and survive. He can also regain magical energy by eating, sleeping, consuming the souls of others, or having sex. Yeah.

He possesses superhuman abilities and skills according to his Class, Assassin. What will most likely come up is his Presence Concealment skill, which masks his presence as a Servant and magical entity. He also has the Doppelganger, which enables him to flawlessly transform into another person.

More info on his powers here.

FATE/GRAND ORDER JP SPOILERS AHEAD!

Thanks (or no thanks!) to Baal and Archer of Shinjuku's meddling, the Doppelganger was grafted into the Assassin of Shinjuku's Saint Graph. The Doppelganger is a Phantom, an urban legend — in other words, an entity unable to become a Heroic Spirit. However, fusing a Heroic Spirit with a Phantom bestows them with the Phantom's powers. In Assassin's case, the Doppelganger allows him to do the following:

  • The ability to change his appearance at will.
He can only transform into other sentient beings with identities. (i.e. a statue - no; your mom - yes; your favorite anime character - yes; your dog - that's cursed) His disguise is indistinguishable from the original and can't be detected via magical means. He is capable of copying a Servant's skills and Noble Phantasms, but for personal reasons he doesn't copy the latter.

  • The ability to assimilate his chosen identity's feelings and memories upon transformation.
This lets him perfectly copy his chosen identity's behavior and mannerisms. Memory probing is possible and inevitable.
