background; i'll fix it later
The 108 bandits of Liangshan are human reincarnations of demons who were trapped in Heaven and want to repent for their sins by saving China. Yay. Each of them are born under a Star of Destiny, and Yan Qing was one of them! But being born under a demonic star also means that he'd face misfortune, so...
Yan Qing was a victim of circumstance. He was an orphan who was taken in by the wealthy squire Lu Junyi after his parents died when he was young, so he's been the guy's servant for literally all his life and regards him like a father or older brother. Lu Junyi was a great guy, very benevolent etc. but he was too confident in his own sense of judgement (he's naive, it's bad) so he didn't trust YQ. He didn't praise YQ that much either.
The Liangshan bandits (in disguise!!) trick Lu Junyi into setting off on a journey far away. YQ tells him it's dangerous (because bandits are in that area!!) but he ignores his advice and takes his servant Li Gu with him. The bandits ambush them OBVIOUSLY but treat Lu Junyi like a guest of honor and ask him to join, because he is just that great a guy! But he declines.
The bandits let Li Gu go first but lie and say Lu Junyi has already joined them. Li Gu has an affair with Lu Junyi's wife, though, so the moment he comes back he kicks YQ out of the house. Then Lu Junyi comes back! YQ, who has been begging on the streets for a while, tells him about the affair but Lu Junyi doesn't believe him again and disowns him in anger. Then he goes back home and Li Gu has him arrested and executed for rebellion lmao
Yan Qing is distraught but he's also Asian, so he kills the executioners and rescues his former master anyway because honor and loyalty. He advises Lu Junyi to join said bandits of Liangshan since he is already branded a criminal by the state.
So yeah, he really didn't want to be an outlaw. YQ is only there for his master LMAO but he holds a pretty high position in the group! Lu Junyi recommends his talents and shit. His stories usually involve him going undercover, fighting bad guys, or babysitting this big, dumb and bloodthirsty guy Li Kui because YQ is the only one who can pin him down in a second. His most important contribution was talking the emperor's favorite courtesan, Li Shishi, into helping the bandits get amnesty from the emperor -- an ultimately bad decision on Song Jiang's part since they all die because of it!! It was a racy chapter. Li Shishi was into him. She touched his tats.
ANYWAY, FGO focuses on his final scene in the book. After the bandits, now legit, suffered losses during their battle against the rebels of Fang La, Yan Qing advised Lu Junyi to leave the bandits while he still can. There's political unrest in the capital and he suspects that Lu Junyi might get dragged into it. Lu Junyi ignored him once again because glory was promised to him! So Yan Qing was like WELL OK and left the group without saying goodbye to anyone else. Lu Junyi was later poisoned by Gao Qiu's men at the capital.
Fate/ Yan Qing regrets abandoning his master. Yes, Lu Junyi was shit to him, but that's still the master who took care of him when no one else would! And he feels guilty for letting his master walk to his death. In Shinjuku, he even says he would have stopped him from going back to the capital if it meant killing him. He hates how he blindly followed his master, but he hates how he wasn't an honorable person until the end... more. He should have at least died with pride but that didn't happen. He just ran away and betrayed his master...
The doppelganger lets him be other people and break out of his role so he's like "hehe no more Mr. Nice Guy!!" but like... He wants glory. It's in his nature as one of the 108 Stars. But the doppelganger's nature is to look for other heroes to become, so it doesn't help with his self-esteem issues. The tragedy is that he can't find glory and pride in himself now without becoming someone else.
Also now he has to pretend he's both happy AND sane, so fuck Moriarty.
